    IntroductionMargaret is a 77-year-old woman who was diagnosed with dementia and type 2 diabetes mellitus. She was recently separated from her daughter who was her primary caregiver and her husband , both of whom were unable to cope with his agitated behavior. Margaret now resides in an aged care facility. Margaret's mental and emotional health is concerning and the family is distraught and struggling with feelings of guilt and anger. This article discusses the intervention that healthcare professionals can implement to reduce the turbulence of this transition period for everyone involved. The need to reassure the family will be addressed initially as well as interventions aimed at reducing agitation and risky wandering. A description of dementia will follow with a discussion of the importance of caregiver training and capabilities. Finally, highlights of medication adherence will be discussed following information on type 2 diabetes mellitus, examined in relation to the experience of dementia. This article will focus on information, reasoning, methods and choosing appropriate interventions.
