Giotto Di Bondone was one of the first artists to pursue a naturalistic approach to representation based on observation, while depicting the illusions of real emotions and landscapes. Born in Florence in 1266, Giotto was a fresco artist who revolutionized painting techniques, breaking with the rigid training that had been the foundation of painting. It is said that he was discovered by Cimabue painting a lamb on a rock at his home in the countryside. Giotto's early works stylistically mirrored those of his mentor Cimabue; however, it had already begun to exhibit original pictorial characteristics. Through the use of naturalistic observation, atmospheric perspective, and expressive humanist methods, he moved his painting from the flatter Byzantine style to the vibrant natural work of the Renaissance. The set of frescoes in the Scrovengi Chapel in Padua, which depict the life of Christ, are considered some of his greatest pieces.
