Santiago RashadDr. SinghIntro To Biology02/20/13Course DocumentIntroductionBiology is a fairly large field in the world of science. The term itself has its roots in Greek with “bios” meaning life and “logos” meaning study. The term itself refers to the study of all areas of life found in nature. It covers the entire magnitude of life, from the various cell structures and materials that make up living creatures to the constitution of primitive cells of the past. It encompasses the vast strata of life, from infinitesimal cells to gargantuan blue whales and other leviathans of the world. Under the umbrella of biology are a multitude of unique disciplines such as physiology, genetics, ecology, and morphology. At a fundamental level, all life begins on a microscopic scale. Cells, of which there are three possible typings, prokaryotic, eukaryotic and archaeal, are often considered to be the constituent elements par excellence of life. Cell theory, as postulated by Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolph Virchow, is one of the key principles of biology. He states that all living organisms are composed of cells. A secondary concept of the theory is that "cells arise from pre-existing cells." This is an important trait to note because it is a brief allusion to different forms of cellular reproduction such as binary fission and mitosis. The final claim of the theory and probably the most important claim of cell theory is that the cell functions as the basic unit of life. This assertion has so far only been corroborated by scientific research and therefore constitutes a rule of biology which is the subject of universal consensus. Over the years, the modern version of ...... middle of paper ...... ancient prokaryotes in eukaryotic cells that gives rise to the current model of life is wonderful enough, but the fact that organelles work in such efficient harmony, seemingly run like well-designed machines, this is another fraught development. The organization of life begins with the cell. Without it, there is no life, even on a microscopic level. To imagine that giant beasts from the Jurassic and Triassic periods such as Triceratops and Liopleurodon share the same basic parts as some as infinitesimal as an amoeba or plankton is astonishing. What is even more astonishing is the fact that this is easily provable and verifiable. In the study of life, the composition of all creatures is known at a basic level. Even without scientists to explain the facts, the facts themselves are immutable in terms of defining the composition and rules of existence of life..
