Alice is a typical late 1960s teenager trying to find her way in the world. She's fifteen and worries about all the normal teenage things (boys, sex, weight, social life, parents) and, like many other teenagers, she has a hard time coming to terms with a place and turns to drugs for comfort. She becomes rebellious and ends up paying for her actions. The novel begins with Alice's first diary entry in September. She talks a lot about feeling like she doesn't fit in and her conflicts with her mother and siblings. She also talks about the anxieties linked to the first sexual intercourse. Shortly after the first entry, her father gets a promotion and arranges a move for the family, which excites Alice, as she is ready for a change in her life. However, as the move gets closer, Alice becomes nervous and scared about fitting in in a brand new place. On...
