Essay / ||Emily Dickinson, the isolated Amherst poet, is today considered one of America's greatest poets. By breaking conventional grammatical rules, she created a new form of poetry, her own, to achieve this title. Through the use of unconventional grammar styles, Dickinson was able to create a poem that, when read in the mind, seems incomprehensible, but when read aloud is clear to the reader . Dickinson also used common objects and emotions in her poems, which captivated the reader and allowed her to escape into a world created by her. Dickinson's use of common objects and emotions was due to her antisocial and hostile past, which created a twisted soul inside Dickinson that was depicted in much of her poetry. Dickinson's methods created a new form of poetry, raw and unfamiliar, that made her poetry more meaningful and realistic than the average poem. The unconventional break from traditional grammar styles provided a new type of poem for American audiences. The presence of hyphens throughout his poems requires active engagement on the part of the reader. A reader cannot just read the poem, he or she must think while reading the poem. The hyphens create a diversion from the simplicity of normal poems. An example of Dickinson's use of hyphens can be found in The soul selects its own society: The soul selects its own society - Then - closes the door - At its divine coming of age - Presents no more - The most common use The prominent hyphens appear in the second line, "Then- close the door-." Instead of "Then close the door", there is a pause between that and close the door because of the dash. The sentence is divided into two parts, the first part, Then; e...... middle of paper ......t theme in his poems. In addition to the common emotions related to her life present in her poetry, Dickinson used the common objects she found daily in the house, due to her exposure to them. Dickinson found irony, ambiguity, and paradox hidden in the simplest household items and domestic tasks. Dickinson's lack of exposure to the real world allowed her to take common experiences and objects and transform them into her poems. Through Dickinson's new, untouched form of poetry, a new style was exhibited. Through her life's experiences, she gave definition to emotions and described her feelings about them in her poems. From his twisted soul poetry was born. The difference in grammar, the presence of common emotions and themes, and Dickinson's background are the reasons why Dickinson became one of the most famous American poets..
