The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Study of the character of Walter MittyIn the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", a man named Walter Mitty goes in town with his wife to do some things. Throughout this story, Walter Mitty shows that he is a very forgetful and truly stubborn man with a vivid imagination. He is constantly distracted and often starts daydreaming. There are some clues in this story that Walter Mitty is very forgetful. A lot of this is probably due to his constant daydreaming throughout this trip to town and his lack of focus on what he's doing. After Walter Mitty dropped his wife off at her hairdresser, he began shopping. Walter picks up his shoe covers, then “Walter Mitty began to wonder what the other thing was that his wife had told him to take. She had told him twice before they left. » (90) Also, a little later, Walter Mitty "was always wrong" (90) This last quote shows that Walter Mitty must forget things quite often. The story also shows that Walter Mitty is a really stubborn person. When he was dropping off Mrs. Mitty, Mrs. Mitty told Walter Mitty not to forget the shoe covers he had been asked to buy while he was in town. Walter Mitty's reaction was "I haven't. need shoe covers" (88), but he finally gave in to his wife and he bought the shoe covers. Another incident that shows that Walter Mitty is stubborn occurs when his wife tells him to put on his gloves, and then Walter Mitty puts them on, but when his wife is off site, he immediately takes them off Walter Mitty's most obvious trait is his constant daydreaming. Throughout the story, Walter Mitty becomes easily distracted by everyday events. His dreams turn these simple events into wild fantasies, such as becoming a surgeon, a bomber pilot and captain of a ship. An example of how he turns something from everyday life into a dream occurs when Walter Mitty tries to remember what his wife told him.
