  • Essay / Review of Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult - 1382

Throughout the novel Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult, we, as the reader, are treated to a glimpse of the many limitations that are placed on the main character, Katie Fisher . While one could argue that the majority of limitations were placed on him because of his religion, there are also limitations that were placed on him because of his parents. The pressures of Katie Fisher's life are very similar to those of a young student named Neil in the film Dead Poets Society, where he endures daily pressures that turn into a problem he cannot overcome. The same family boundary situation is found in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Picoult suggests that there are many different limits that can be placed on an individual, including a possible religion, their family or perhaps even themselves, but regardless of why the limits are there or from whom it may come from, having too many boundaries never leads to a desirable outcome. And depending on who controls the boundaries one follows, ultimately determines how one decides to deal with unwanted situations. In the novel Pure Truth, author Jodi Picoult follows the life of a young girl, Katie Fisher, who, due to her religion, is not capable of things that girls her age are normally allowed to do. . Katie has to work on the family farm and wear certain clothes. Because of her religion, she must marry an Amish man and continue to be faithful to her religion. If Katie ever crossed that border, she would be placed under a "ban," which meant she wouldn't be able to eat with her family or much else. (Picoult 20) When Katie ends up getting pregnant with a baby whose father is not Amish, Katie forces herself to believe that she is not pregnant and refuses to tell anyone. Middle of paper, ......s throws the ball, fails and "throws like a girl". The young boy who believes that girls could never handle a soccer ball the right way is introduced by "Virginia Dare" who ends up throwing the ball further than any boy. Once this happens, the boy says, "she forgot she was a girl," suggesting that no girl could have thrown a ball that far. The boy is shocked, the boundaries he had in mind that no girl could cross, crossed them by changing his mind about girls and what they are capable of. Sometimes the limits we set for ourselves can be changed by a simple action of another person, but sometimes it takes years to realize that the limits we set for ourselves were not the right ones. to be continued. As we have seen, limitations have led to lies, death and fulfillment. Can we succeed with limitations, or are these limitations the very reason we fail? ??
