Essay / Reflections on the Merchant of Venice - 1440
I was chosen to be “Portia” for the production of our class play. Obviously, this stole the color from my cheeks since Mr. Mior honored me with being the main character in the play “The Merchant of Venice”. I had mixed feelings because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to play the character well. However, with the trust of the teachers and the support of my friends, I met the challenge. It is undeniable that most of us have encountered difficulties in reading The Merchant of Venice. The different values and cultures as well as the Old English used in the Elizabethan era confused us as we read. So, during the class hour, we watched the film “The Merchant of Venice” to improve understanding of the play. Thanks to the film, I was able to illustrate the settings of “The Merchant of Venice” and appreciate the messages conveyed. Additionally, it helped me develop Portia's character in the play, especially the intonation and facial expression. Besides that, by watching the movie we got some clues on how to make our room more lively and attractive. I must have memorized the lines more than any of my classmates. What I feared the most is that Portia is a round character. His mood and style can vary from scene to scene. This is particularly true of Scene IV, Act I, where Portia had to disguise herself as a lawyer to help her lover. Therefore, while trying to understand exactly Portia's mood, it helped me understand the style and atmosphere of the play. Additionally, for the staging of the play, we used modern English instead of the original script to ensure that our audience would not be confused by the language and storyline. Additionally, I had to do some research on my script to find and understand the meaning and that ultimately helped me bring out Portia's vibe. Automatically, by remembering the storyline, I also become familiar with the character's important quotes. At first, I didn't really like Portia. Geraldine James (1990), who played Portia in "The Merchant of Venice", agrees with me because she found Portia rather unbearable. To me, Portia is like other stereotypical fairy tale characters. I didn't really know how to play the character of Portia. I had to watch the film several times to feel my role.
