Essay / Mary Anne Warren's work, On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion, describes her rationale that abortion is not an inherently wrong action for a mother. By distinguishing between being genetically human and being a fully developed "person" and member of the "moral community" that encompasses humanity, Warren argues that fetuses must be proven to be human beings in the moral sense of the term. so that their elimination is possible. be considered morally bad. Warren's reasoning defining moral personality as exhibiting a combination of five qualities such as "conscience, reasoning, motivated activity, communicative capacity, and self-awareness" forms the basis of his argument that a fetus does not presents none of these elements which would do so. justify one's classification as a morally relevant person and community member (Timmons 386). Warren begins his argument by explicitly defining a human person as someone who is a “full member of the moral community” (Timmons 385). By this logic, people in a vegetative state should also have rights at least analogous to those of an infant. Many people practice or pursue medicine for altruistic reasons and derive pleasure and purpose in life from restoring the injured and sick to health. If a potential treatment can be developed by doctors and researchers to restore normal cognitive levels to people in a vegetative state, it would be considered wrong to allow such a person to die because, like an infant, they have the possibility of develop a capacity. work as long as research continues to find a way to reverse such a condition.
