Places of Interest in DurhamIn the North East of England lies the city of Durham, in Old English the word Durham comes from dun and in which the name translates to hill. In Old Norse, Durham means holme or roughly translated as island. Durham is believed to have traces dating back to 2000 BC of a certain settlement and actual traces of the town after the death of the year 995. Durham Cathedral Around 995, the monks of Lindisfarne founded Durham Cathedral after fleeing their homes when the Danish Vikings attacked their homeland. The original building on the site had been demolished and today's building was built in 1093. Over the years, the Chapel of Galilee, the western towers, the Chapel of the Nine Alters, and then the central tower were rebuilt in 1465 and lasted until 1490. In 1104 Saint Cuthbert died and was found to be in very good condition as they believed he had been embalmed.
