“Obesity is a global public health problem affecting not only developed but also developing countries” (Poon & Tarrant, 2009, p. 2355). In Asian culture, obesity has not been an issue of concern until recent statistics indicate that of the more than one billion obese people worldwide, one-fifth are of Asian descent (Poon & Tarrant, 2009). As obesity increases, so does the level of concern about patient satisfaction. Bias and discrimination exist at all levels of society, even in healthcare, and the purpose of this study is to show how often this actually happens (Poon & Tarrant, 2009). Significance of the problem Rising rates of obesity are having a devastating impact on the world. Asian culture (Poon & Tarrant, 2009). People suffering from obesity now suffer from comorbidities. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension are just a few of the disorders with significantly higher rates, requiring individuals to seek medical attention. Studies have shown that in Hong Kong, there is sufficient evidence that people who are morbidly obese are so stigmatized that they tend not to go out and see a doctor for fear of being ridiculed (Poon & Tarrant, 2009). This information alarmed the nursing student and made her want to research the prevalence of negative attitudes toward obese patients. The reason the topic was chosen was to express the need for change. When providing care, despite the amount of experience, the passion one finds in helping a person in their time of need should mean everything. If anything less than satisfactory is experienced, the quality of care provided may be compromised. It is important to educate nurses and staff in direct contact with obese patients about the appropriate protocol. With proper education regarding obese patients, the overweight population can consult a doctor with satisfaction and ease. Overall, the research was straightforward and well explained.
