Essay / Space discoveries and why it matters to people
Since man first landed on the moon nearly fifty years ago, humanity has made remarkable progress in exploration spatial. Since humanity ventured into space, many people have spent a lot of time in space and have conducted many experiments that help us understand our solar system and the universe. In the recent past, space exploration was a very expensive affair, but with the advancement and refinement of technology, space colonization is now a feasible concept. Lately, many companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin have attempted to refine the technology for exploring space. There are various reasons to explore space and make humans an interstellar species. Humanity must populate and expand into space to ensure the continued survival of our race, as space has infinite resources, while Earth has a growing population and environmental concerns could push us to the point of extinction. Earth's resources are limited, and with the growing human population, humanity must look and see beyond the limits of planet Earth. Some of the resources that can be harnessed in space are energy. Energy is important to humanity because existing sources and the processing of these sources are often polluting and unsustainable. Harnessing energy from space and channeling it to the planet can help the world reduce its dependence on unsustainable energy resources. Solar energy is abundant in space and therefore energy-intensive industries can be built there. Living and working in space is a feasible idea that can be realized before the end of the century. Some people may not know how economically beneficial space is, but some companies such as SpaceX are studying how it can facilitate transportation from one point to another on earth via space (Dunn, 2017). Blue Origin is exploring the possibility of space tourism which they plan to undertake by April 2019 (Wattles, 2017). There are also many government and private satellites that have facilitated communications around the world. Therefore, space is already economically beneficial, and the more humanity solves the challenges posed by exploration, such as transportation and habitability, the more opportunities will become available. These possibilities will revolutionize the way we live on planet Earth and our perception of space. Second, the human population is growing exponentially and it is estimated that over the next three decades it could reach 9 billion people (United Nations, 2015). The utility and exploitation of the Earth is currently reaching its highest levels since the beginning of human civilization. It is unimaginable that a population growth of over 2 billion people could be sustained with diminishing resources on Earth. Some of them take millions of years to recover, such as gas and forests. Furthermore, the environmental damage caused by humanity to the planet is irreparable. At the current rate of use, there is a strong demand for humanity to look beyond our planet, and even our solar system. The Earth is getting smaller and smaller for us and its capacity to support an ever-growing population.
