  • Essay / Television is NOT a medium of education for children - 1071

The field of technology has seen continuous growth and advancement in society and has shifted gears and is now heading towards a less road frequented. The path, as bumpy and winding as it seems, follows a path dictated by television and all the powerful media. Television requires visual perception and is an inactive form of gratification for viewers. The hardest hit are young children. Children's shows like cartoons have positive and negative effects on children, and parents should not let their children adopt the TV storyline as a guide for living their lives. TV shows, such as cartoons, have greatly influenced our lives to an unknown extent. Cartoons are very popular with children. “American children watch an average of three to four hours of television per day” (Johnson). Television can be a great channel of influence on children. Television viewing today is different from the past because there is more advanced technology, which allows everyone to have access to the sources. Many television programs, such as cartoons, still contain violence towards young viewers because many people forget the effects and consequences of violence seen in children. “By the age of 18, the average American child will have seen approximately 200,000 acts of violence on television alone” (something you need to know about media violence and media literacy). When kids want to watch the cartoon, there are many channels to choose from. Television programs are accessible to everyone, because with a simple press of the remote control, you can turn the television on/off. Cartoon scenarios are watched by children. Children love to fantasize about being superheroes. Many children adopt the characteristics of the cartoon and use it in their real lives, and children become more aggressive, violent, and begin to imitate the character from violent shows. “According to the National Study of Television Violence, 40 percent of violent incidents on television are imitated by characters presented as attractive role models for children, such as heroes” (Seppa). Children like to imagine that they are superheroes with powers and recreate the scenarios with other children. During this game, incidents can occur, causing huge injuries to children. Most anime show heroes using their powers to protect people and the world. Children assume they can be like the character, which is a bad message because the characters are animated and created by people..
