Collective bargaining is the process in which employers and unions undergo a series of negotiations that include terms typical of collective bargaining in which both parties agree to terms of employment. These conditions can include wages, hours, and working conditions (Budd 229). Collective bargaining can take place in several types of areas, ranging from politics to sports. It allows for proper resolution of disputes and issues that benefits both parties involved, producing an outcome that is not one-sided. Collective bargaining is “the negotiation of wages and other conditions of employment by an organized body of employees” (Beal, Wickersham, and Kienast 5). Four issues that are likely elements of a collective agreement are:1. Compensation - benefits, salaries, leave, vacation, shift bonuses and profit sharing.2. Personnel policies and procedures: transfer policies, promotions, layoffs, vacation rules and overtime.3. Duties and rights of employees: employment standards, workplace rules and seniority rights4. Part 2 of the employer's duties and rights - management rights, subcontracting, discipline and dismissal for cause, and safety standards.
