  • Essay / Technologies and children

Hello everyone. My name is Venera Zhakhyan. And today I want to talk about technology and children. This is what most children look like today. Familiar image, right? Children these days are surrounded by technology. Most people don't have a clear understanding of why technology is so harmful to children when they use it for more than several hours a day. Today I'm going to explain why. Say no to plagiarism. If we take into account children aged eight to eighteen, the average time spent with technology is already around ten and a half hours. Nearly three-quarters of them have a television in their bedroom. But instead of using technology for so much time, they could play outside, do sports, etc. The consequences of children's daily use of technology lead to unfortunate results. One of them is related to children's health. In the United States, about 35 percent of children are overweight. This is a big problem these days. According to an analysis published in Obesity, children who use technology too much are much more likely to become obese. Why does this happen? The answer is simple. Children spend most of their time playing video games, watching TV, using their laptop or tablet. Children don't do a lot of sports, exercise and movement in general. They don't burn calories or energy. Furthermore, the study on childhood illnesses conducted in 2014 in the United States showed that children using technology more regularly eat much more than children using technology more rarely. As a result, many children are overweight. (Loop, 2017) Being overweight can cause various diseases such as diabetes or heart failure. (Ramey, 2012) Except in cases of overweight, children's overuse of technologies can harm intellectual development. Playing video games, watching TV, etc. does not require a high level of activity. They can simply passively observe something or someone else on the screen. But children could draw, read books, write poems or songs instead of playing at home. This will lead to more perspective and an intelligent generation. But today they are not developed in various areas as they fundamentally should be. While playing games or watching TV, children do not develop their creativity and language skills. As a result, intellectual development is threatened. Another problem is related to social development. Most children play alone instead of making new friends. Even if children communicate with each other, it is usually in virtual reality and on a screen. There is therefore no real communication between children due to the overuse of technologies. (Plowman, McPake, Stephen, 2010)Do you want to continue in this direction? I don't think anyone wants to. In some places, people have already started working on this issue. Has anyone heard of the Peninsula Waldorf School? Employees of companies like Apple, Google and Yahoo send their children to this school. The reason is that there are no computers, cell phones, tablets, or even the Internet in this school. Children use their imagination, creativity and communicate more with their peers,!
