The purpose of the experiment was to determine what factors affect the friction force through experiments. The objective was to understand how the coefficient of friction is derived from the normal force and the friction force and to determine whether the contact area between the surfaces produces different values for the friction forces. Friction forces are those that oppose movement when two surfaces come into contact with each other. Friction is a force acting parallel to two surfaces in contact. If the object is moving, the friction force always acts in the opposite direction to the direction of movement. Frictional resistance to the relative motion of two objects is proportional to the force pressing the surfaces together as well as the roughness of the surfaces (Nave, R., nd). The friction force of two objects is generally independent of the contact area and also the speed of movement of the objects.
