Essay / Persuasive Essay on Animal Testing - 924
“More than a million animals are burned, maimed, poisoned and abused in American laboratories” according to DoSomething.org. And although these animals may be considered protected under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), they can still be tortured and abused in laboratories. Furthermore, there is absolutely no guarantee that the results and data collected during these procedures are accurate. Our anatomical constructions are similar in some respects but not at all interchangeable. Even though it has saved lives, animal testing should be banned because it does not ensure that these procedures are carried out painlessly and because humans and animals react differently to the drugs and chemicals used. The most controversial argument against vivisection has been the pain inflicted on the animals. the animals used. “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” (Gandhi). This is a powerful quote that reflects humanity as a nation. People should respect animals as they would human beings. The discomfort felt by the subjects is unimaginable and would be considered barbaric to inflict on humans. So why animals? Because they don't have a voice to say no? Because humans are “superior” to animals? It is irresponsible for any human being to remove these animals from their habitat and place them in a place where they will suffer and ultimately die. “Developmental toxicity testing involves administering orally administered doses of chemicals to pregnant females, usually rats and rabbits. The animals are killed just before delivery and the fetuses are examined for any signs of toxic effects of the test substance” (from aavs.org). The passage above is just one of many heinous laboratory experiments. About 95% of small animals such as mice, rats... middle of paper ... the same as humans; in fact, their reactions to pain are virtually identical (humans and animals scream, for example). (The body shop). In an experiment called the LD50 test (in which the tested chemical is pumped into the animal's stomach until it dies), the subject experiences excruciating pain such as vomiting, diarrhea, paralysis, convulsions and internal bleeding. Since the obligatory outcome is death, suffering does not end with euthanasia. They wait until their body can't take it anymore, which could take days or even weeks. Conducting medical experiments on animals is a savage act and must be prohibited. It's cruel to the animals involved, it's not always accurate, and with today's technology we can create a better alternative. This act should be banned and replaced by synthetic subjects.
