The speaker's assertion that generalists are more important than specialists is, in some ways, a reflection of the current problems in our society. Specialists are clearly preferred in very technical or highly specialized fields, but, at the same time, understanding who we are as a human species and the direction of our evolution or progress requires a much broader perspective . Let us first recognize that specialists are not specialists. Overrated and sometimes even greater specialization is required in certain fields, such as medicine, scientific research or sports. It is difficult to argue that Olympic champions are highly specialized individuals who must devote the majority of their time to training. Without such dedication and concentration, the highest sporting achievements would not be possible, but at the same time I must admit that sportsmen include in their usual routine the elements of the adjacent field.
