  • Essay / Mango Street House Analysis - 738

Esperanza was a cowardly child who transformed into a courageous woman. Alicia and Esperanza had a conversation about Mango Street and Alicia said, “Whether you like it or not, you are Mango Street, and one day you will come back too” (Cisneros 107). Esperanza responds, “Not me. Not until someone makes things better” (Cisneros 107). Alicia tells Esperanza that even if she doesn't like Mango Street, she will still come back, but Esperanza says she won't until someone makes it better. Esperanza doesn't want to return to Mango Street even though she's part of it. Esperanza wants to leave Mango Street for good. Although Esperanza knows she is part of Mango Street, she doesn't want to be. The ignorant child believed that she could leave Mango behind and forget where she came from, but she doesn't know that anyone will. When Esperanza decides to leave Mango Street, she says, "They won't know I left to come back." For those I left behind. For those who cannot go out” (Cisneros 110). Esperanza will leave Mango Street to return to help those who cannot escape. Esperanza does not leave for herself, but for others. She realized that no one would do anything to help Mango Street, or care what happened to her, and decides to take matters into her own hands. Esperanza realizes that she is the one who must change Mango Street. Throughout history
