Essay / Innocence Lost: Lord of the Flies, and I only came to...
Innocence LostDoes anyone really know when they lose their innocence? Sometimes other times he just walks past certain people like the children from Lord of the Flies and Maria in I Only Came to Use the Phone. The boys from Lord of the Flies and Maria in I Came Only to Use the Phone were innocent and hadn't completely lost it yet and didn't know they were about to lose it. A small group of boys began to neglect their duties, showing that they did not care about being rescued. When Maria sees more of the Sanitarium and what's happening there, she begins to get lost because of everything she sees. The dehumanization and loss of innocence is great in the role of Lord of the Flies where Jack “creates his hunters. Innocence is the greatest part of human nature and once lost you can't get it back. The Lord of the Flies boys were innocent and they didn't even know it was coming to an end. This quote shows that they were making plans to stay alive and preparing to possibly be rescued and that they held out that hope of being rescued. “We must decide to be rescued.” Jack said this and it was kind of an oxymoron because he would later like isolation and not want to be saved, this quote shows that even he wanted to be saved. Ralph and Piggy are the two characters who have wanted to be saved throughout the story and they cling to the idea of being saved. Maria from I only came to use the phone, she was innocent and hasn't lost it yet and likes the boys from Lord of the Flies didn't know she was there either. This quote shows how Maria was placed in a sanatorium by accident: “The bus entered the cobbled courtyard of a huge, dark building that seemed... middle of paper ...... begged for it and even if she did, they wouldn't do anything because they all thought she was an inmate and was just as mentally damaged as the other inmates. Because she was in a sanitarium, everyone thought she was crazy and wouldn't help her if she asked. Maria lost her innocence because of everything that happened to her and knowing that no one could help her was too much. These characters show how they lost their innocence because of what they suffered and now they will never get it back. This is why innocence is an important part of human nature, because it takes so much of it for it to disappear and after it disappears, these characters would no longer have it.
