  • Essay / The devastating effects of neoliberal policies

IntroductionNeoliberalism, also called market economics, is a set of economic policies that have become widespread over the past 25 years. The concept of neoliberalism was imposed by the financial institutions under Bretton Woods such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Bank (Martinez & Garcia, 1996). One of the famous economists published a book titled “The Wealth of Nations” in which he claimed that free trade is the best way to develop the economies of nations (Martinez and Garcia, 1996). He and other economists also encouraged the removal of government intervention in economic matters, no restrictions on manufacturing, the removal of borders and barriers between nations, and no taxes (Martinez and Garcia, 1996). The main goal of economic globalization was to reduce poverty and inequality in poorer regions. However, the effects of neoliberal policies on populations around the world have been devastating (MIT, 2000). live in extreme poverty and it is these people who need financial support the most (Makwana, 2006). Over the past two to three decades, wealth disparities between nations as well as within nations have increased. Currently, one in five children in the United States experiences poverty, chronic hunger, insecurity, and lack of health care (MIT, 2000). This situation becomes even more desperate. Between 1960 and 1980, economic growth in developing countries was 3.2 percent. Then it fell significantly to 0.7 percent between 1980 and 2000, and this is the period when neoliberals...... middle of paper ......w poorer (Martinez & Garcia, 1996). References Evans, TL (2011).
