  • Essay / Science Fiction: the art of the possible at Ray...

“Science fiction is any idea that arises in the head and does not yet exist, but which will soon change and which will change everything for everything the world, and nothing will change will ever be the same. As soon as you have an idea that changes a small part of the world, you write science fiction. It’s always the art of the possible, never the impossible,” said Ray Bradbury, the author of the short story “The Sound Of Thunder.” He used these principles of science fiction to create a story consisting of the journey of a time machine and its passengers into prehistoric times. Once there, Eckels, along with his fellow hunters and guides, found what they were looking for. As they followed the metal path, their game approached, a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The group took down the monster but not without consequences. The intense thrill of the chase caused Eckels to leave the path, which changed the story. After realizing what their reality had become, the outraged safari guide shot Eckels, ending Eckels' life and Ray Bradbury's short story. In "The Sound Of Thunder", Ray Bradbury used the science fiction elements of setting the future time, the importance of science and the problem. First, the time setting was one of the science fiction factors used in the short story. For example, the plot takes place in the future, near the beginning of the play. In 2055 AD, Eckels had joined Time Safari Inc. He entered the sparkling machine and the group began their safari into the past, to the age of dinosaurs. Not only did the action take place in the future, but the main events also took place in the past. Shortly after their departure, they got off the machine. Eckels and the others ended up at about 60,000,000...... middle of paper ...... permanently changed by the death of the butterfly, by the butterfly effect. This problem contributes to the use of science fiction in this short story. In conclusion, several science fiction traits were shown throughout the story. The plot took place in both the past and the future. In the multiple domains of time, the important role of science was expressed. Despite the benefits of time travel science, this useful tool has proven to be a problem. Through these science fiction elements, Ray Bradbury warned readers of the dangers of time travel. Like his many other science fiction works, he used this short story to avoid a negative outcome. He wrote his literary works to speculate about what will become of the world. In doing so, he would achieve his goal and that of science fiction, to change the world through the art of the possible..
