Essay / ""Past Effects in the Present" - 1456
In a psychoanalytic world, seventeen-year-old Holden, the protagonist of JD Salinger's book "The Catcher in the Rye", struggles to cope with life, and lives in its own imaginary world, according to Donald E. Hall, professor of English and chair of the English department at West Virginia University, "Human behavior is often a kind of enigma, requiring concerted investigative acts to uncover the root causes “I am the most terrible liar you have ever seen in your life. It's horrible" (Salinger16). Holden's whole life is based on lies because he doesn't trust people with the truth, so he isolates himself from the rest of the people. This reflects the author, Salinger because he too believes that there are many "fake" people and they should be considered "fake". Isolation is one of Holden's main problems, he thinks it is better to stay there. away from people. He is a very emotionless teenager, he doesn't want to get attached to anyone because of his trust issues. He does this because he had a harsh childhood and that most. of his thoughts have become unconscious. According to Freud's theory, "The unconscious state reveals the protagonist's conflicts and sometimes creates and/or transfers the author's disorders. states"(Freud1). Holden is his own problem. He has the opportunity to put his past behind him, but instead he chooses to let it affect him in his future, which causes him problems as 'he approaches his academics with failure, fa...... middle of paper...... hurt him deeply and horribly during his childhood years His education doesn't seem to either. matter to him, he thinks that as long as he can continue to move forward in life, there will be no need for school. Therefore, Holden brings all the stress and depression not only to himself, but also to his children. He is indifferent to the people who care about him so much he also does not realize the trouble he has caused his family. Holden's mother is already very ill, and finding out that her son has not gone to. school because he got kicked out, it's almost going to kill her. He has so much to catch up on in his life, and he needs to actually do them, not just waste his life on alcohol and cigarettes. Psychoanalytic theories apply to Holden because he needs to become a better person and become someone he wants to be because his flaws can be corrected..
