1960s between the year segregation began. A town called Maycomb, a quiet town where segregation, inequality, discrimination reigned. There were cruel people in the city but no one wanted to fight for what they believed. Maycomb a town full of people who would just follow what society would say. Until a huge news that shocked everyone in the entire city. News that traveled to Maycomb and other towns. By discovering that a white person was defending a colored person. In To Kill a MockingBird, Atticus had the wisdom to defend Tom Robinson because Atticus imposed his personal values of seeing the good in people before judging them with unfounded ideas. When Atticus defended Tom Robinson, Atticus showed his children that by taking the case, he overcomes people's ignorance and is able to take on the negativity of his town, as seen when he says to Scout. “Just keep your head up and keep your fists down. No matter what anyone tells you, don't let them take your goat. Try to fight with your head to change…it’s a good thing, even if it resists learning” (Lee 76). Atticus' wisdom in taking charge of the matter was right as he shows how positive he is towards his children by looking at the good in others. Atticus always showed his children between good and evil and made his case by demonstrating that you should never judge people by color. Atticus knew better than having to follow society's unfounded ideas, he chose to first value his ideas and then obscure them. Atticus had the wisdom not to oppose Tom Robinson but to defend him because he was able to demonstrate the power he had over society and give hope to people of color. Atticus' wisdom in defending Tom Robinson was correct by how he was able to state his values and beliefs and then judge a person for their color and unfounded ideas. Like when Scout and Atticus were talking about favoring niggers and thinking badly of them. “Nigger lover is just one of those terms that means nothing like snot. use it when they think someone favors black people over themselves. (113). As Atticus is able to give hope to the Negroes and teach the children a real life lesson, he is able to take on all the negativity. Atticus develops a way to hold his head high rather than letting the
