Essay / Rhetorical Analysis: “The Marines” - 835
In another form, “[The Marines] pour out with the poignant power of superb human beings doing what they believe is truly right. There is grace and magnetism in the way these sleek children fling themselves out of planes, surge across inhospitable terrain, and leap with incredible force over one barricade after another. Advertisements use sophisticated psychology to lure today's peace-loving young adults into our "humanitarian" army. (Kronstadt, 2014). It is through these images and the power attached to words and astonishing propaganda that draws young people into the world of war with the Marines. The ad being analyzed tells the recruit that they will be able to “walk with honor,” “command with determination” and “take their place among the most elite warriors on the planet.” They can “take their place”, saying it as if they already had their place, as if the place was waiting for them. The ad also highlights that they will “command with determination”, meaning they will become firm and determined as a leader. The Marines will give them the skills and knowledge to be able to command and hold people's lives in their hands by training them and leading them into combat - even if that word isn't brought up in any advertising. The 'walk with honor' has already been highlighted in this essay, but it is important to note that honor, patriotism, freedom and democracy are all tied together middle of paper......believe for many different reasons why the Marine Corps is the best way to become the best version of themselves. This essay has proven how the Marine Corps uses specific strategies and tactics via propaganda advertisements, and particularly the one analyzed, to attempt to shape the perceptions and minds of its target audience by glorifying war life through American ideals of freedom, elitism and honor..
