The mysterious “we” could be Hofmannsthal's recognition of his participatory role in using art as an escape. Furthermore, the oxymoronic juxtaposition of "precocious, sad and tender, /The commedia of our mind" (lines 65-60) indicates the uncertain and anxious mood that torments the liberal class. Furthermore, Hofmannsthal reiterates the flaws of the garden, whose beautiful veneer wears away over time – “Ugly facts beneath pretty appearances” (line 62). Additionally, “Feelings half felt in secret” (line 64) provides a link to Anatol, as it summarizes the main character's half-involvement in
