  • Essay / Summary and Themes of Divergent by Veronica Roth

Independent Reading: DivergentVeronica Roth created the book "Divergent". Everyone was separated into five independent factions: the straightforward (the honest), the self-sacrificing (the selfless), the bold (the courageous), the friendly (the peaceful), and the scholar (the intelligent). On a special day where one must choose a faction to stay in, Beatrice decided to leave her faction and live the life of a Dauntless even though she was an Abnegation (46-47). She was noticed by everyone as soon as she joined the Dauntless faction, as she was the first to jump into a pit, which is one of the tests that Dauntless initiates must pass. She introduces herself as "Tris" and makes new friends. Will, Albert and Christina soon become friends with Tris. As she has friends, she also has enemies: Peter and Molly. Before they can officially be called fearless, they are told they must go through 3 stages of testing. The highest ranked person must choose the job they want and determine who is higher ranked. It will be evaluated at each stage. The first stage is physical combat, Tris and her comrades help each other but Tris is ranked near the bottom, being almost excluded from the competition. The term "Divergent" means that a person can pass for several factions. This shows that Divergents contain human qualities unrelated to the other people in the book who only possess one trait. In the book, Divergents are meant to be dangerous to the world and are seen as a threat to higher-ups. The author of this book seems to be trying to make the point that because humans are so dynamic, constant arguing leads to conflict. Tris' mother joins her daughter on the day of the visit. Being a former daun... middle of paper ...... significantly changes your life and the way you have lived up until now. Beatrice's choice to leave her old faction and join Dauntless completely changed her life. If she hadn't chosen to join the Dauntless faction, she may never have been able to save the brain-dead Dauntless soldiers. Choices are what people face in their daily lives and Veronica Roth shows how important each of the choices we make is. The ending of the book was somewhat assumed given how intimate Tobias and Tris were. There were a few surprises when Tris' family came into play to save her, which ultimately resulted in Tris saving the entire intrepid faction. Its foreshadowing of Eric teaming up with the Erudites to form a rebellion was pretty obvious but I think it still gave a big "wow" and entertained me as much as I could ask for in a book..
