A vulnerable population is defined as “people who are at risk of developing health problems” due to “their sociocultural status, their limited access to economic resources or their personal characteristics. such age and gender. (Chesnay and Anderson, 2012) Some of these vulnerable populations may be labeled and are treated differently in our healthcare system. Many families are labeled based on their wealth, race, and age. Specific types of specific population are immigrants and the homeless. Many immigrants come to the United States to start a new chapter in their lives. However, they may develop health problems later and need to see a doctor for treatment. “Immigrants have limited access to health care due to the way health insurance is obtained in the United States.” (Chesnay and Anderson, 2012) Obtaining insurance can be very expensive, frustrating to understand and unfair to some people. Some immigrants are unable to properly communicate their concerns and health issues. Many immigrants suffer from a health condition that is inconsistent with their medications and treatment. Some believe that if they are not committed to improving their health, they do not deserve to be treated fairly compared to those who have insurance and are able to pay their medical bills. Immigrants have difficulty finding jobs. Stressors soon pile up and need help mentally and psychologically. Homeless people and immigrants face many health care challenges today. They are categorized and stereotyped by society. “Health care for immigrants, refugees, and temporary residents is complicated by diversity in languages, health practices, dietary choices, cultural definitions of health, and prior experiences with U.S. bureaucracies. » (Chesnay and Anderson, 2012) Homeless people face challenges every day in meeting their needs. They are exposed to vulnerable situations. These two vulnerable populations must have “physical needs, psychological needs or social needs”. (Creasia & Friberg, 2011) Meeting these needs can be difficult, but with the right resources, they can overcome their difficulties and live the life they envision to have..
