The father works in a factory and the mother died of the flu four years ago. But with three children, the money they earn does not allow them to take good care of them; and the lack of food and coal for heating is particularly troublesome. Charlie's father sent her away and as horrible as that sounds, Charlie would not agree. She is paid one dollar a week, but it is not as much as at the factory, she lives in better conditions. Even though she was away from her family, Charlie promised her father that she would always take care of her sisters. The following winter was brutal and challenging for the girls as their father fell terribly ill. Charlie's sisters, Abigail and Elizabeth, came to work and serve on the Parkington plantation. They did laundry, dusted carpets and swept chimneys. After a few months, Mrs. Parkington sent the girls to MaryAnn; the only orphanage for girls in New York. With their father passing away, she didn't want to have to take care of three other children. The headmistress, Madame Cornelia, was a heavy-handed and vindictive guardian. Charlie's thin clothing and constant hunger were intolerable. Force Charlie to clean the gutters in the middle of winter and separate her from her sisters. Which really was the hardest obstacle for Charlie, Abby and Lizzie to believe that she abandoned them. If Charlie disobeyed or asked Madam Cornelia to see his sisters, Cornelia would threaten to send Charlie on the orphan train to a family in the country so that she would never be able to see her sisters again. with her threats, Charlie plans an escape for her and her sisters. As spring came, it was time to execute her plan, while Cornelia went to the market where Charlie was sneaking in and found Abby. Henry begins to speak “Girls, Samantha and I have grown attached to you, we know you were special the first time you walked into our store. We couldn't bear to let you out of our lives. "How would you like to be Charlie, Abigail and Elizabeth Edwards?" Samantha interrupted. The sisters screamed with joy, as if they had a family again; No more Cornelia, no more factory work. Charlie cried as she hugged her new family, she felt loved and safe for the first time since her father passed away. She knew how proud he would be of her, to watch over her sisters and how happy he would be to know that his daughters were with a couple who adored them dearly. Charlie grabbed his sisters and gave them a big hug then whispered, "I promised I'd always take care of you..”
