  • Essay / The positive contributions of integrating humility into...

Humility is not the absence of pride, it is the quality or condition of being humble; The modest opinion or estimation of one's own importance is what causes the individual to repress, keeping his thoughts, philosophies and research in reserve. What we sometimes pretend to be humility may actually be pride. Rather than visualizing it as a person's appearance, humility has to do with one's willingness to travel to places where help is needed. A humble person is not afraid to ask stupid questions. He doesn't need to know everything. He dares to question a person's name when they have forgotten it rather than pretending he knows it. He is willing to inquire about sensitive matters, such as a death in the family, even if others avoid such questions. He mentions the stain on someone else's face instead of letting it stay there. Humility contributes positively to conflict prevention. According to the Association for Observation of Psychological Science, “the problem does not appear to be a lack of attention. Constructs related to low humility – such as narcissism and self-enhancement – are among the most robust in social psychology. “APS Fellows Jean Twinge of San Diego State University and W. Keith Campbell of the University of Georgia recently published a popular book on so-called endemic narcissism” (Kok 1). While it may be gallant for a person immersed in honor to moderate their interpretation of themselves, a person involved in an unhealthy relationship probably needs to strengthen their self-esteem. Moreover, the degree of humility still remains an enigma. For example, someone who claims to be humble on a self-report measure might demonstrate arrogance and lack of...... middle of paper ...... lower social support and ability to weakened adaptation (Kok 1). In conclusion, humility means thinking less about yourself and more about what others think of you. Humility is not about bragging about how good your work is compared to that of others. Humility is beneath everyone. Humility is living without depending on monetary possessions. Humility is not one of those words that people stop to look for the meaning of. It’s one of those moral values we strive for; the one we admire. Most people think they know what it means to be humble, but putting humility into action isn't that simple.
