  • Essay / Cool Hand Luke - 1014

In Cool Hand Luke, the movie begins with the word VIOLATION on the screen. The word comes from a parking meter and sets the tone for the entire film. Luke Jackson, the main character, is arrested for cutting off the heads of the city's parking meters while drunk, or in legal terms, destroying city property while under the influence of alcohol. When asked why he cut off the heads of the parking meters, Luke replied: “You could say I was settling an old score. » Although this leads viewers to believe that he probably received a parking ticket in the past, no clue is given as to what the old score might have been. He was sentenced to two years in prison, in prison. His punishment didn't fit the crime, and today such an act would likely result in time in community service rather than a forced labor gang. To further emphasize that his punishment is worse than his crime, Luke Jackson dies at the end of his story. . Luke is a decorated veteran, but he left military service at the same time he entered it, as a soldier. This indicates that he had authority issues during his stay. He was awarded the Silver Star, the BronzeStar, and a few Purple Hearts, indicating that he is courageous and likely a humanitarian, as the SilverStar is usually awarded in recognition of an act of bravery that saved lives. The fact that he was never promoted, or was promoted and subsequently demoted (the story does not give details) indicates that his superiors, those who had the authority to promote him, did not react well to his achievements. For Luke, death represents the ultimate freedom. There is no doubt that he believes in God, to the extent that he speaks to God several times throughout the film, but his conversations always seem more like arguments than prayers. In one of the final scenes, the empty shell of a church represents Luke's relationship with God, and even the emptiness within himself. Luke feels like God was never there for him. He tells God just before the story ends that God has never dealt him a good hand. The fact that the military authorities considered him a hero and decorated him with medals does not make him a hero in his own eyes. Luke is a tortured soul, to the extent that he tells God that he doesn't deserve any good things because he killed people in the war. Yet Luke is a free spirit, true to himself, without any regard for the rules and regulations of other human beings. The crime for which he is arrested is not a crime of violence against anyone, it is
