Essay / Divergent - 693
Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where people live in 5 distinct and separate factions. Each faction has a different goal and way of life. Fearless, dangerous and protective, he protects the city from strangers in the outside world. Scholars, intelligent and cunning develop the city's high-tech medicines and technology. Abnegation, selfless and benevolent, is responsible for caring for the factionless and running the city government. Frankness, always honest, assures the city's judges and lawyers. And finally, Amity, loving and peaceful, manages the farms outside the fences that surround the city. The Prior family belongs to the Abnegation faction and Beatrice has been taught her entire life to be selfless and caring. When children in this town reach the age of sixteen, they take a special test that tells them which faction they are best suited for. Most people only get one result on this test, but Beatrice's test indicated that she was fit for three factions: Scholar, Abnegation, and Dauntless. It's very rare, but there are other people like her. They are called Divergents. The day after the test, there is a choosing ceremony in which the children choose which faction they would like to belong to. If they choose a faction other than their family, they are "shunned" and will almost never see them again. Beatrice chooses the Dauntless faction and her family, along with most of the town, are shocked. A faction transfer from Dauntless to Abnegation is almost unheard of. But choosing Dauntless isn't the only thing initiates need to do to get started. All new Dauntless initiates must train and compete to become a member of Dauntless. A tradition of the Dauntless is that initiates can change... middle of paper... the rest of one's family and become determined to end this horrible situation. Her brother, her father, and Four's abusive father join her on her journey. They head towards the Dauntless headquarters. They head to the upper level where the simulation is running that causes everyone to act this way. Along the way, Tris' father is killed trying to fight Dauntless guards. Tris arrives at the summit and discovers that her love interest, Four, is running the simulation. She knows she has to kill him. They fight and at one point she points a gun directly at him, but she can't kill him. She turns the gun over and gives it to him. This confuses him and wakes him from his trance. They then stop the simulation and escape together. The book ends with Four, Tris, Four's abusive father, and Tris' brother leaving on a train away from all the chaos of the city..
