Essay / Body Modification Research Paper - 1743
Body modification is defined as any deliberate alteration of a person's physical appearance. Most people think that only tattoos and piercings fall into this classification, but that only scratches the surface of how bad body modifications can be. Everything from simple earlobe piercings to breast implants, tattoos and scarifications are considered a form of modification. In Western cultures, changes are made to aesthetics and self-expression, but every culture is different. Native American tribes find spiritual clarity or vision in body suspension, where the body is literally suspended on hooks, and in Imperial China's practice of binding women's feet to represent wealth and beauty. In this article, we will look at not only the different piercings, but also their history and that of tattoos, as well as the different modifications that various cultures practice and why. I will explore tribes such as the Mursi tribe of Ethiopia and the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, India. By the end, you will have learned about diverse cultures and traditions and will have a whole new perspective on the art of body modification. Tourists call them giraffe necks, the women of the Kayan tribe wear rings, a long brass spiral, around their necks. The practice of wearing neck rings in Thai culture began in Burma with a few Kayan tribes. At first, the Kayan tribe was located in what is now Myanmar, but due to military conflicts in the 1960s and 1970s, they were forced to flee to Thailand. They lived on the Thai border in refugee camps until they were placed in permanent homes by the Thai government. Women believed that wearing these rings enhanced their beauty. Many sources have reported that women are used for tourism purposes by the Thai government...... middle of paper ...... women are excluded and are not as taboo. Today, many people choose scarification over tattoos. Its origins date back to the practice of Australian Aborigines dating back to 60,000 BC. People have now found creative ways to express themselves, like the "lizard man" and the "stalking cat." Both men altered their bodies using silicone implants, tattoos, teeth sharpening, plastic surgery and various piercings, to resemble what they believed to be their inner animal. Yes, most of society views them as monsters, but they no longer receive the hate that a person would receive for a simple belly button piercing. Everywhere there is a person with a tattoo or piercing, whether for religious, cultural or aesthetic reasons. More and more forms of body modification are still being invented or considered every day, but it is up to the person to choose to what extent they will take it..
