The Fall of HamletThere are many reasons why Hamlet met his downfall. One being his decision to keep his father's murder a secret. Another problem being the betrayals of his closest friends. Perhaps if Guildenstern or Rosencrantz had been there for Hamlet to rely on and trust, he might not have been so alone. A little sympathy from his girlfriend Ophélie, and even his mother Gertrude, would have been nice too. Unfortunately, Ophelia is estranged from Hamlet because of her father. Gertrude marries her uncle Claudius, responsible for her father's death, and then seeks to kill him. And Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are ordered by Claudius to spy on Hamlet and betray him as a friend. How Gertrude can marry the brother, and the murderer of her dead husband beats me! How she remarried so quickly after his death, and without even consulting her son Hamlet, proves how ugly she truly is. "Spare, save, Horatio. The meats cooked in the funeral oven coldly furnished the wedding tables."(I;ii; 180-181). What strikes me is that even after Hamlet told his mother that Claudius was responsible for his father's death, she still decided to stay with him. Which is absolute proof of her egocentrism and the importance of her son to her. “A bloody deed almost as bad, good mother, as killing a king and marrying his brother.”(III;iv;29-30). Hamlet, now having no blood family to rely on, feels very alone. But I don't see his downfall coming. For Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to betray Hamlet as they did is utterly despicable. Especially since they were receiving orders from Claudius. Claudius proves to be a very good reader and shows his ability to manipulate people into doing what he wants. "Welcome, dear Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Moreover, we very much wanted to see you, the need we have to use you caused our hasty dispatch." (II;ii;1-4). Since Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have spied on Hamlet, and reported to Claudius the fact that he was mad. Claudius could then determine Hamlet's next move and counter it with his own. "It was not madness. There is something in his soul." (III; i; 161). If Claudius hadn't had Guildenstern or Rosencrantz to aid him in his efforts, I think Hamlet might have had a chance of surviving..
