Essay / Literary analysis of The water was dark and she left...
The unveiling of a work of art symbolizes the progressive revelation of the young girl's feelings. At the beginning of the text, she seems to have no emotion: “Live. Survive. It’s the same thing” and “she had the thoughts of a machine.” She is depicted as a robot and is neither in possession of feelings nor vulnerability. However, as the story progresses, she gradually gives in to her overwhelming and pressing emotions. “She took off her watch and her bikini and lay in the sun” and “She ran naked to the water.” This can be seen as the beginning of the revelation of his emotion; its nudity introduces a feeling of vulnerability, a quality not associated with machines. Furthermore, the abandonment of his watch reinforces the idea of a deterioration of his “roboticness”. The watch is a symbol of time and regulation, the girl choosing to abandon it means that she no longer needs to rely on regulation and control. By the end of the story, her true emotions had surfaced: "No, you old bitch" and "She went through the water and filled herself with anger." She is no longer a machine and an automatic. This final manifestation of emotion is represented through the discovery of the work of art. The man who discovers the coin symbolizes the mother. It was essentially the girl's mother who filled her daughter's head with her "stupid and recurring statements" and, therefore, her emotion. Additionally, the revelation of his emotions coinciding with his death implies that, although emotions are stereotypically seen as something beautiful to share, his emotions were all-consuming and devastating. In conclusion, the disintegration of his "robot-like" armor is depicted through the discovery of a work of art. The bird cage is a symbol of trapping in the middle of a paper ...... on social conventions. Additionally, red signifies energy and passion, with the girl being identified as a symbol of these values. "Harder. Go. Do. Cut. Harder." Juxtaposed with her frightened and depressed mother, her energy is highlighted. Additionally, dedication is a recurring value held by the girl throughout the text. “Every evening after school, the girl practiced on the swim team,” “Be a driving force.” She is portrayed as being very eager and therefore extremely determined. Likewise, ambition is an important value obtained by the girl. “Be a driving force… don’t think, breathe!” and “Coming out, she knew that as soon as she was old enough, she would leave her mother.” She is described as extremely focused. Therefore, many values and attitudes are explored in this text, such as determination, anger, aspiration, despair and evil, all of which are represented by the color red..
