    Confucius taught his disciples, including Mencius, using the story of a thief and his son. The father steals other people's cattle and the son discovers it. The son finds himself faced with a moral dilemma: to uphold the law and protect his family. When the son finally reports his father to the authorities, the judge decides to take the father's hand and take the son's life. The father has broken social law and must be punished accordingly. The son broke natural law, which constitutes an unnatural act. Confucius was then asked another question: how to choose between natural law and social law? He responded by saying that this situation should be avoided at all costs, but if forced to do so, he would advise following natural law. The conflict between the two can be avoided through personal cultivation and education. Self-cultivation prevents us from imposing the situation on our family members.
