  • Essay / Inevitable Fate in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is the story of two young lovers whose love was destined for destruction. They could never have imagined that their love would lead to the tragedies that befell them. These two young people had done nothing wrong, unless it was wrong to fall in love with someone whose family was in conflict with yours. Three aspects of the destruction of Romeo and his lovely Juliet included: the feud between the two families, the nurse and her betrayal of Juliet, and the most important aspect of all, fate. The feud between the two families was a contributing factor to Romeo and Juliet's love being doomed to destruction. “From the old grudge to the new mutiny” (Prologue.3). Both families, Montagues and Capulet, had many problems. There was hatred between the two families, so much so that even the servants hated each other. This quarrel would have caused many problems for Romeo and Juliet. These two young lovers knew it and that's why they didn't reveal their marriage. If their parents had discovered their secret, they would have made their children's lives miserable and Romeo and Juliet would not have been allowed to see each other. Both of these families were very stubborn and there was probably nothing that could have caused them to become friends. In the prologue, we learn that the only way to end the "conflict" was for Romeo and Juliet to die. “With their death, they bury the conflict of their parents” (Prologue.8). Neither the Montagues nor the Capulets would have agreed to the marriage. Therefore, keeping the secret caused Romeo and Juliet to turn to other people for help and, sometimes, these people gave them bad advice or simply betrayed them. The Nurse was one of those characters who betrayed the young couple. The nurse, who had been Juliette's friend, turned on her at a crucial moment and told Juliette that it would be better if she married Paris. “I think it is better that you marry into the county” (III.v.230). This betrayal of the nurse left Juliette alone. She was a wise young woman but it would still have been beneficial for her to have had the help of the nurse. Juliette was left alone to make some very important decisions. I think if the nurse had been there to help Juliette, things might have gone differently..
