It's a huge problem today because people don't realize that once he puts on that mask to be something that he he isn't, even for a "second" it can have a permanent impact on who he is. His entire personality changes and people around him probably won't recognize the person he is becoming or the person he has already become. Most people don't realize that once he loses himself, he will eventually lose the people he loves and cares about deeply. If he finally wakes up in reality and sees who did everything he did, it might be too late and that's the worst feeling. In conclusion, double consciousness has many different effects on different types of people. Sometimes double consciousness can be used to one's advantage for better or even worse. You have to stay true to who you are so you don't get blinded by what society thinks you should
