Essay / Essay on perception and belief - 1847
For example, we are unable to discern the exact number of people in a large gathering. Indeed, the relevant information provided by the senses has not yet been converted into the digital form necessary for the acquisition of a belief. As a result, perceptual experience only gives an approximate representation of the group. According to Dretske, the distinction between perception and belief is therefore expressed in an analog-digital form. The formation of beliefs involves a cognitive process over which we have strong control, while perception corresponds to a more instantaneous process which fails to store everything of which we are consciously aware. Dretske argues in his article that perceptual experience derived from our senses plays no justificatory role in the formation of sense perceptions.
