  • Essay / Coupy in A & P, by John Updike - 702

Sammy mentions what's wrong with her then moves on. He doesn't think she's attractive, so she's not worth his time. The only part that really stands out about her is after Sammy leaves and he says, "Big Tall Goony-Goony (not just as raw material, she was that bad)" (36). Goony is just another word for stupid. The raw material is the base, so without judging anything other than her physical appearance, he basically calls her big, tall, and stupid. How can this not be considered rude and disrespectful? She did nothing to be treated like a worthless idiot. But he quickly forgets it when he discovers a "queen" to watch.
