« Surround the pink pocket full of bouquets. » Most people consider this a simple childhood nursery rhyme. In reality, it's a nursery rhyme about the Black Death. The Black Death was a horrible, contagious disease that killed millions of people in the 1300s. This plague affected people in Europe in such a way that people believed God was punishing them and even nursery rhymes punishing them were invented on this subject. It is probably one of the worst disasters that has occurred in the history of medicine. The first documented plague occurred in Justinian, which began in 541 AD. The plague had disappeared by 700 AD and did not return until 1328. (History) When the plague had returned, it first hit China, then it traveled to England in 1348. It remained in England until 1350. (lordsandladies) The Black Death got its name from the effects on society and the fact that they believed it to be a punishment from God. (History) Although it was called the Black Death, most people knew it better as the Plague. Once the plague passes, it kills one in five people. It has killed more than 35 million people in China. The plague also killed 20 million people in Europe, almost a third of the population. (eyewitness to the story) They believe the plague was killing up to 10,000 people a day. Which ultimately killed more than 75 million people in total. The spread of the plague was by trade routes, by animals and by air. Although the situation was inappropriate in many ways, most of those affected by the plague were poor and middle class, few wealthy people contracted the plague. (History) People were not the only thing that was affected by the plague to which many animals fell victim.
