Essay / Analysis of Veblen's Theory of Business Enterprise
1. IntroductionIn the field of economics, much has been said about the nature of business organizations and their role in the economy, but most traditional approaches fail to form a realistic model of the economy. The standard vision of the enterprise is that of the enterprise, a homogeneous entity which produces homogeneous objects using perfectly substitutable homogeneous capital and labor; Sometimes discussions will mention "The Entrepreneur", an all-knowing master coordinator. (Kasper et al., 2012) In The Theory of Business Enterprise, Thorstein Veblen proposes an alternative approach using his intuitionist analysis, developed notably in The Theory of the Leisure Class, of the structure of business and the end industry and early 1900s. Veblen's analysis reveals that the interests of businessmen and industry do not always align with those of the community or society as a whole and can be detrimental to them . (Veblen, 1899, 1904) This article will review Veblen's history, theory and analysis and attempt to offer evaluations and critiques of Veblen's view of the relationship between businessmen, the industry and society as a whole. To try to achieve this, this article will be organized into 3 parts:1. Veblen's general view of business in the industrial age2. The machine process and Veblen's view of the end3. A final conclusion2. Veblen Against Mainstream Economic Theory(1) Veblen's general view of business in the industrial ageContrary to the standard view of the business, Veblen recognized that the industrial age brought with it a new type of economic organization very different from sole proprietorships and small businesses. partnerships closer to the standard idea of the company.
