  • Essay / Vision Reflection - 1885

This is done by emphasizing a detail that enhances the viewing angle while minimizing or omitting anything that works contrary to the presented viewing angle. In my positive paragraph, I included a detail about the windows that made them look grand. “Through life-size glass” is the example that explains the fact that the windows are huge. When we think of full-size glass, most people tend to think of huge, expensive panes of glass. This gives the glass a certain positive outlook. The viewing angle is obtained using this description of the glass. However, in the negative paragraph, the detail of actual size is conveniently omitted. Instead, I chose to focus on “old windows.” This detail from my negative paragraph achieves its negative purpose by comparing glass to something old. In the West, being old has many negative connotations. Another example of selecting and omitting details is "dusty old books." When I chose this detail to highlight, I wanted the reader to understand that this library was old, dusty, unused, and most importantly, a place they would not want to work in. This reinforces what I want the reader to believe. Selecting and omitting details is a powerful strategy that will select only certain details and leave others to reinforce the desired viewing angle.
