Essay / Who helped Canada become a nation? - 866
General Arthur Currie helped Canada build an international reputation during the First World War because he was a capable army commander who consistently achieved victories throughout the war. For example, her courage to go into the trenches while being gassed and her calm under fire during the Second Battle of Ypres helped the Allies win the battle. During the German poison attack, Currie left his brigade headquarters even though the area he was in had been gassed and then destroyed by fire. He brought in two regiments of British reinforcements. A few days later, the allies reestablished a line of defense by counterattacking the Germans. On May 25, 1915, the allies won the battle. This shows that General Arthur Currie played an important role in the Second Battle of Ypres and contributed to Canada's good reputation. Thanks to his instinct and composure under fire, he was promoted to major general. Another example of his actions would be the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Even though it was controlled by the Germans, General Arthur Currie knew that indiscriminately sending men across no man land would only increase casualties. So, he hatched a plan for the troops to closely follow a massive artillery barrage on the German barrage. His preparations for the battle were extremely thorough, and by immediately following the barrage, the Canadian infantrymen gained the element of surprise. They advanced 100 meters every 3 minutes and managed to cross the ridge. This shows that the Canadian achieved the only significant Allied victory in 1917. General Arthur Currie's plan worked and gave Canada a superior reputation. In addition to his great deeds, his characteristics define him as a true Canadian hero....... middle of paper ......ry Fox is still a heroic man in the modern era.
