    Referring to my previous paragraph, if we were still living in Vietnam, our family would be considered a traditional family. We are a non-traditional family since our family contrasts with the traditional family image stated by Coontz: each individual in my family shares responsibility for my parents' role, and my parents don't really have their specific responsibility. Coontz suggests that the reasons most families become nontraditional are primarily due to declining wages. She states in the article that “median income for men ages 25 to 34 fell 26 percent” (Coontz 4). It is very reasonable to say that this is the main reason why our family has moved away from the traditional image; because wages have decreased but prices of basic necessities are presumed to remain the same (if not increase), then someone else, or all members of that family, would also have to work to support the family. Two years after living in the United States, my father was laid off with little to no benefits; my mother had to start working full time. Once my father was able to find a job, his salary became half of what he received before. But since my mother also worked, our family did not experience any major problems..
