    In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the developmental period known as emerging adulthood; a period of life from late adolescence to late twenties. In many ways, emerging adulthood is a time defined by a sense of uncertainty, as individuals attempt to better understand themselves. A big piece of this puzzle is development in the cognitive, physical, emotional and social domains; Yet in many ways, society and the Internet are harming this young age group by maturing these four areas. The trends, pressures, and stereotypes that push my popular culture to skew emerging adult development in a negative direction. The society we live in today is addicted to the false sense of realism established by popular culture. From movies to magazines, emerging adults are fed unhealthy expectations of what they should look like physically and, in turn, are presented with a plethora of unhealthy choices. In most cases, these signals are subtle and often go unnoticed. From the constant stream of photoshopped celebrities to the constant stream of weight loss television commercials, today's youth are told that they must look a certain way. These messages have caused many young people, especially girls, to lose weight to unreasonable levels. Almost all images published by popular magazines are retouched and receive increasing criticism from feminist groups around the world (__________). Yet society also influences physical development on the other side of the spectrum. As fast food becomes more integrated into everyday life, a growing number of emerging adults find themselves struggling with weight gain and obesity.
