    Red is the prison's head chef and Norma is his sidekick. Both women are in prison due to pressure from their husbands to maintain a certain role. Red's husband was involved with the Russian mafia, thus making her conform to the role of a "mafia wife" which involves being calm, helpful, and above all, respectful. Red is eventually forced to become a drug mule for the mafia and lands here in prison for life. Norma, on the other hand, was involved with a cult leader who forced a woman to marry him to expand the cult. Norma is a mute character due to this man's continued oppression which leads her to a complete psychotic breakdown and pushes her husband off a cliff to his death, which lands Norma in prison for life. Both women once fought for basic human rights in their own lives. Neither was ever considered an influence in a highly oppressed patriarchal society. These were women forced to play the historical role of “mistress of the house”. De Beauvoir writes: “We now see that the myth [of woman] is largely explained by her usefulness for man. The myth of women is a luxury. It can only appear if man escapes the pressing demands of his needs; the more relationships are concretely experienced, the less they are idealized” (1271).
