  • Essay / My amazing internship rotation of watching a C-section

Today was my second day of labor and delivery. When Grace and I first arrived, we were sent to change. After Grace and I changed into our scrubs, we went to the front desk to receive our tasks. A registered nurse (RN) asked us if we would like to witness a vaginal birth or a cesarean section (C-section). I chose to watch a C-section and Grace decided to watch a vaginal birth. Once we decided who would do what, we split up. I followed the registered nurse who was to assist and prepare the operating room (OR). She first went to the clean laundry room, where she collected the essentials for the operation. When everything was gathered and prepared, we had to sit and wait for the patient who had arrived late. The nurse constantly checked the computer to see if the patient was in the chart. After the clock struck 9 a.m., surgery time, the registered nurse decided to go help get the patient registered faster. When we got to the patient's room, there was a nurse having the patient fill out some paperwork. The RN nurse took care of the paperwork while the other nurse completed the paperwork on the computer. Looking at all the questions asked and the time it took to complete the paperwork, I realized that the paperwork process is not easy. Once we were finished with the paperwork, we returned to the labor and delivery unit where we got dressed. We wore medical boots, masks and nurse caps. Once the patient was ready to enter the operating room, she would first meet with the anesthesiologist to complete further paperwork. After meeting the anesthesiologist, we all went to the operating room. There was a student nurse, two anesthesiologists, the patient and two nurse nurses. While the student nurse prepared the operating room, the patient received an epidural......middle of paper......my aunt who is pregnant with her third baby after two miscarriages. I remember thinking what a miracle and a gift it is to bring a child into the world. I also remember hoping that my aunt would have the opportunity to experience the miracle and receive the gift. If I became an obstetrician, how rewarding it would be to give birth to a child. Hearing the baby cry for the first time or seeing the mother's face after seeing her baby for the first time is something special. In this internship, I learned the procedure of a cesarean section. I also learned how tough skin is. How much pressure is used to remove a baby from the uterus. I loved how hands-on this experience was and how much my nurse allowed me to witness it. I love everything I learned and gained from this experience. There's nothing I didn't like about this rotation. It was an incredible day for me at the internship.
