After-school programs have increased over the past decade. They pay increasing attention to the extracurricular hours of children aged 6 to 14, coming to consider this daily period as a time of high risks and opportunities. Risks observed during these hours range from boredom, stress and illness to self-destructive and socially destructive behaviors. After-school programs provide needed opportunities, including building caring relationships with adults and peers, as well as enriching additional academic learning time. The federal government contributes only 11% of the cost of after-school programs, while 29% of students meet the definition of low-income and need federal financial aid. 76% of Americans believe government officials should help increase funding for after-school programs. Students need extracurricular activities. They are useful for the development of children. Extracurricular activities are beneficial for student achievement because they can help children learn the skills needed to succeed academically, provide alternatives for getting into bad things, and give them structured time to work on social skills with their peers. peers. After-school programs have had many successes in a study of 73 schools to show many benefits for young people, including improving their personal social and academic skills and self-esteem.
