  • Essay / Floods in Memphis Tennessee - 883

Floods in Memphis Tennessee are terrible events, but some have left their mark on history and impacted society, forcing many people to seek solutions. Historical flooding dates back beyond 1927, but Memphis' first calamitous flood occurred in 1927 and again in 2011, but between these dates there were street floods that occurred without interacting with the river. Many important aspects of daily life are lost in floods, such as lives, homes and money. People are looking for solutions to prevent flooding, and well-implemented ideas could easily become an ideal panacea. Memphis is where I grew up and experienced several floods, which gives me a much stronger sense of the history, impacts, and techniques to stop flooding. Several well-known floods have affected Memphis, Tennessee, such as the Great Mississippi Flood. of 1927, the Mississippi River flood of 2011, and storms that caused street flooding like those of 2008 or 2010. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was caused by extremely heavy rains that swelled the Mississippi River to to its water transport capacity. People tried to prevent flooding in Memphis by making and fortifying levees to expel water from the land; however, water from the river began to seep through the sandbags, which were supposed to keep water out. Memphis Fire trucks had appeared at the breaches and were pumping water onto the sandbags. Despite valiant efforts, the river overtook the embankments and caused enormous damage and deaths, which would affect hundreds of people. Once again, significant rainfall was the catalyst for several floods in Tennessee, including the Mississippi River flood in 2011. This flood reached over forty-eight... middle of paper ...... flood zones completely, which would hopefully prevent flooding. The floods that affected Memphis Tennessee are now part of history, had devastating impacts and have solutions. The Memphis floods may not be a major chapter in history, but they shaped the growth of Memphis. The impact leaves many people with scars and others with small scratches, but in any case, a very small number of people would wish this misfortune on. Many would prefer to have a solution to avoid river flooding or immense precipitation. Society has experienced these floods almost every year, but some have been more damaging and dangerous, which could lead to a buildup of traumatic events that will mark this flood in history and impact Memphis for years to come. Flood solutions need to be implemented as quickly as possible so that no one has to deal with the loss of something valuable..
